5. What’s on your menu and what are your top sellers?
Sandwiches & Salads
- Fried Chicken: Our star. Free-range dark meat, house-made apple slaw, mayo, and pickles on a fresh bun. Available Classic or Spicy.
- Buffalo Bird: Spicy fried chicken dunked in Buffalo sauce, topped with Kickin' Ranch and shaved celery.
- Mango Habanero Bird: Sweet and spicy heat with our signature mango habanero glaze.
- Naked Bird: Just the chicken and apple slaw (no bun).
- The Bird Salad: Romaine and baby kale mix with braised beets, quinoa, celery, and apple. (Add chicken for a full meal).
- Chicken Biscuit with Tots: A half-order of fried chicken on a brown butter-brushed buttermilk biscuit, served with a side of tater tots.
Wings & Sides
- Whole Wings: Not your average tiny wings- we serve 'em whole. Get them Classic or Spicy with a side of ranch or blue cheese.
- Buffalo or Mango Habanero Wings: 10 pieces for $16.00 or 20 pieces for $30.00.
- Curly Fries or Tater Tots: Seasoned and crispy.
- Loaded Fries or Tots: Topped with applewood-smoked bacon, sour cream, green onions, and melted cheddar.
- Apple Fritters: Made with Fuji apples and topped with a cinnamon maple glaze.
The Top Sellers
- Spicy Fried Chicken Sandwich: The undisputed #1. The berbere spice blend gives it a unique, earthy heat that sets it apart from every other chicken spot in SF.
- Loaded Curly Fries: The ultimate side. The combination of the seasoned "curls" and the bacon/cheese topping is a major crowd favorite.
- Chicken Biscuit with Tots: This is a cult favorite for breakfast and early lunch. It’s the best "bang for your buck" on the menu.
- Apple Fritters: These are the most common add-on. They are small, warm, and the perfect sweet finish to a spicy meal.
6. Do you have vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or allergy-friendly options?
1. Gluten-Free (GF)
- The "Naked Bird": This is their signature move for GF diners. It’s the full fried chicken portion (classic or spicy) served without the bun, with a side of house-made apple slaw.
- The Bird Salad: A mix of romaine, baby kale, beets, quinoa, and apple. You can top this with their signature fried chicken for a hearty GF meal.
- Whole Wings: These are also gluten-free friendly because we use the same signature breading.
2. Vegetarian
While we are a chicken shop, we have a great partnership with our sister brand, Super Duper Burgers, at our hybrid locations. At the 115 New Montgomery restaurant, vegetarians usually go for:
- The Bird Salad: Very filling on its own thanks to the quinoa and beets.
- Sides: Curly fries, tater tots, and buttermilk biscuits are all vegetarian.
- Apple Fritters: A perfect vegetarian treat.
- Note: If you are specifically looking for a Veggie Burger, our Hayes Valley location (which is a Super Duper x The Bird hybrid) has a full organic veggie patty menu.
3. Vegan
Vegan options are a bit more limited here since our signature items involve chicken and dairy (mayo/cheese/butter).
- The Bird Salad (Modified): You can order the salad with the Champagne Vinaigrette and hold the cheese/chicken.
- Sides: Our standard Curly Fries and Tater Tots are vegan-friendly.
- Custom Veggie Sandwich: You can ask for a "veggie-only" sandwich with slaw and pickles on a bun (check with staff for vegan bun availability that day), though it isn't a standard menu item.
4. Allergy-Friendly Notes
- Peanut Allergy: We typically use non-GMO canola oil for frying, not peanut oil.
- Dairy/Egg: Our buttermilk biscuits and the mayo in the slaw/sandwiches contain dairy and egg. The "Naked Bird" is a good way to avoid the bun and mayo if you have those specific sensitivities.
7. What’s your price range?
The Bird is a Budget-Friendly ($) spot. It’s one of the best values in San Francisco for high-quality, free-range chicken.
Estimate Per Person
1. The Quick Fix (~$11)
- Classic Fried Chicken Sandwich.
2. The Standard Lunch (~$18)
- Spicy Sandwich + Curly Fries + Soda.
3. The Full Spread (~$23)
- Buffalo Bird + Loaded Tots + Local Beer.
8. Do you offer catering, private events, or large parties?
We do offer catering. We offer FREE delivery for catering orders over $50.
9. Is parking available?
Being in downtown SF, street parking is very limited and strictly metered. We recommend:
- Hearst Parking Center (45 3rd St): A large garage just one block over.
- Palace Garage (125 Stevenson St): Located right behind the restaurant.
10. What makes your restaurant unique?
- Always Free-Range: We don't compromise on quality. We only use chickens raised humanely by farmers who care about the process.
- The Power of Dark Meat: We exclusively use thigh meat in our sandwiches. After extensive trial and error, we found that thighs are the secret to the juiciest, most tender fried chicken that never dries out.
- The Berbere Secret: We season our chicken with a signature berbere spice blend. This Ethiopian-inspired mix of chili, garlic, ginger, and fenugreek gives our bird a complex, aromatic heat you won’t find at a standard fry shop.
- Buns Baked Fresh Daily: Every morning, a local baker in Richmond, CA, bakes our buns just for us. They arrive fresh at our doors to ensure that perfect soft-yet-sturdy bite.
- House-Made Apple Slaw: Instead of a heavy mayo cabbage, we load our sandwiches with a crunchy apple slaw made fresh in-house daily. It provides a crisp, sweet, and tangy contrast to the savory chicken.
- Whole Wings: We don't serve "party wings." We serve whole wings that are larger and more satisfying, allowing you to enjoy the different textures of the flat and the drum together.
